Citizen toolkit · Your voice, your representatives

Ask them to step aside

Democrats won majorities in both chambers this month. Leadership elections for the new Congress are coming up, and several incoming Democrats have said they will not commit to backing Sen. Chuck Schumer. This toolkit helps you call, write, or send a web message asking Sen. Schumer and Rep. Hakeem Jeffries to step down from their party leadership posts. Everything is a draft in your own voice: edit it before you send.

Step 1

Who are you contacting, and who are you?

Step 2

Your details

Offices notice personal, specific messages. Keep it polite and about the leadership post. Nothing here is stored or sent anywhere; it stays in your browser.
Step 3

Choose how to reach the office

Calls are the fastest channel. Offices tally them by topic and home state. The whole call takes about 30 seconds.

What to say

  • Call Monday to Friday, 9 am to 5 pm Eastern. After hours, leave the same message as a voicemail.
  • Give your name and ZIP code. Staff log the count and your location.
  • Be courteous. Staff are not the decision makers, and a calm call is a call that gets counted.

Also contact your own Democratic members

Leadership posts are decided by votes within each party's caucus, not by the public. The people who cast those votes are the Democrats in the Senate and House. If you are represented by a Democrat, a short call to your own senators and representative asking them to support new leadership can matter as much as contacting the leaders.
